Skidaway Island - Joseph W. English, 83, died at home under the care of Hospice Savannah, Inc. "Bud" was born in Paulsboro, New Jersey. Almost immediately following his graduation from high school, he went to the Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. During World War II, he was a Navel Cadet assigned to the troop ship, the Raven Mariner making many crossings to England, France, Italy and North Africa. Returning home after the war, he worked at Mobile Oil Corporation while attending Drexel University. He later graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in education. Bud continued his teaching while attending Rutgers studying for his doctorate degree. He later became superintendent of Vocational Technical high schools in Gloucester County, New Jersey and later in Atlantic County, New Jersey. Bud was active on many educational committees, but most proud of his accomplishments representing the state of New Jersey in Washington, DC for all vocational high schools.
Retirement brought him and his wife of fifty years, Claire, to the Landings in Savannah, Georgia. He enjoyed golf, bridge, but never happier than when he had a fishing pole in his hand or working in his flower garden. Until recently, he served on a panel for Chatham County Juvenile Court. He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Marie English, his first wife, Claire Hayes English, grandson, Christopher Calvert and sister, Dorothy Serafinelli.
Surviving are his wife, Sandie English, sons, Mark Ann English, Thomas Rose English, daughters, Patricia English Karam, JoAnn English Tom Calvert, brother, Frank Joyce English, grandchildren, Ryan, Jonathan, Vincent, Matthew, Leslie, Adam, Caitlin, Megan and Emily.
The family of "Dr. E." wishes a most sincere thank you to his caregivers, Beth, Chariese, Ariel and Tia.
Memorial Mass: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 13, 2010 at St. James Catholic Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:15 a.m. until the hour of service. A reception will follow in the church parish center.
